DIY Wall Calendar with Barn Wood + FREE PRINTABLE!

Hiya, friends! You may have seen this fun project on Instagram last week – a DIY wall calendar made with a piece of rustic barn wood! It fits in perfectly with my decluttering + organizing binge, as I’ve been working hard lately to try to get our lives in order by preparing for upcoming events. What better way to do that than with a HUGE wall calendar?! Plus, I had the perfect spot for a little command center. I’m excited to share the full tutorial today along with FREE printables for August – December 2018!

I found inspiration for this wall calendar from Houseful of Handmade and LOVED the idea to use a piece of wood along the top. I assembled my calendar a bit differently and shared the process on Instagram – you can see it all on a highlight in my profile! Let’s get started!

DIY + 2 Weekends = Guest Bedroom Makeover

I love me a little reveal day, don’t you?! Home improvement projects have gotten a bit more difficult since becoming parents, but we’re learning the ropes! Griffin naps for longer stretches now so we’re able to work together more during naps. But ALAS! I’m excited to share some before + afters today! We completed this guest bedroom makeover over just TWO WEEKENDS and while it’s not all dressed up yet, this room has come a long way with a little paint and new trim.

guest room makeover-before

This room was not-so-affectionately called the “junk room” and the “hot air balloon room.” It’s a spare bedroom at the top of the stairs that was used for throwing our home improvement tools and supplies in, among other junk. It was in desperate need of some TLC!

How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets White

*UPDATE: October 2018* Our kitchen is done! See the full post here.

Well, the day has FINALLY arrived! The project that I thought we’d finish over spring break (in March, LOL), was finally completed mid-April! We have FINISHED painting our kitchen cabinets! It’s made a huge impact and it cost significantly less than replacing them.

As with any new project, we did quite a bit of research on the proper way to paint cabinetry. We’ve made some mistakes painting furniture in the past so we wanted to make sure we did it the right way… especially since it’s in the kitchen and they need to be durable as heck!

Our kitchen cabinets were this mid-2000’s wood finish. To me, they look kind of cheap and super outdated. They also make the kitchen feel smaller than it could be.

Fresh Spring Decor Inspiration!

Spring is in the air! Can you smell it?! It’s been kind of chilly in Arizona lately, but I always love the cooler weather. This week I spent some time getting my kitchen area in the spring spirit. I did a little Pinterest-ing beforehand and found a few spring decor staples I wanted to include in my home: lemons, lambs ears, and yellow. I already have some blues in my decor, so I thought the yellow would compliment it nicely.

Come on in and take a tour through my 2018 spring decor! It’s mighty fresh. 🙂

11 Easy & Cozy Thanksgiving Table Ideas

Friends. Can you believe that Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK? It came out of nowhere! I love this time of year. Since moving from Iowa to Arizona, I’ve learned that the seasons are what you make of them. Even though we don’t really get the true fall season here, the weather has finally cooled and there’s fall decor everywhere!

With Thanksgiving next week, I wanted to share some cozy, beautiful, and fun Thanksgiving table ideas! Growing up, I loved helping set the Thanksgiving table. I remember being tasked with folding the napkins in a fun design and arranging all the plates and silverware. We’re HUGE foodies in my family, so the table is a magical place. Table = FOOD!

I’m a little impartial to my own fall tablescape this year, especially the wood rounds and plaid blanket backdrop! 😍

Anyway, from pretty plates to free printables, take a scroll through these Thanksgiving table ideas and have a beautiful, family-filled Thanksgiving!

Talk about easy cleanup! I’m surprisingly enamored with how elegant these place settings look.

10 Easy Ways to Style a Throw Blanket

Earlier this week I was catching up on “This is Us” – wait, have you seen it? If not, please go binge the whole thing right now (guaranteed tears). Anyway, in one scene Kate had family coming over and she was frantically trying to get her apartment ready. She repeatedly throws a blanket over the couch and says, “This THROW won’t THROW!!!” I laughed so hard because that was ME, just that morning!

Why does it seem so difficult to throw a blanket on a couch and make it look… good? Is it just me? I always see effortlessly thrown blankets on Pinterest, but when I do it, it NEVER looks like that. Well, this week I decided it was time to LEARN the art of throwing a blanket. Really, guys, it’s kind of an art. I learned 10 ways to style a throw blanket and I’m going to share the steps for each one! Let me tell you, it’s a lot more folding and primping than actual throwing! Those liars. LOL.

So, I grabbed two of my throw blankets and two matching throw pillows and got to work! Head’s up: You can find the canvas pillow with your custom state and either “home” or “roots” in my Etsy shop here! Without further adieu, here are 10 ways to throw a throw!

Possibly the most “classic” of all the looks! Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, grab from the middle of the folded edge and throw to the corner of the couch. Play around with the edges of the blanket and create ripples in the top layer of the blanket to achieve the desired look. Inspired by Better Homes & Gardens.

Product Review: Mirror Frame from MirrorChic.com

One of my more popular posts on Rise and Renovate is our DIY Bathroom Mirror Frame, which was part of our master bathroom makeover. It was a super simple, super cheap project that instantly upgraded our builder-grade mirror. Well, last month I was contacted by MirrorChic.com to try out one of their custom mirror frames! MirrorChic.com makes pre-cut and custom mirror frames for builder-grade mirrors. They also promise an easy DIY installation!

While I’m partial to my own framing method, I thought it would be fun to try their product and compare the two.

*MirrorChic.com sent me a custom mirror frame in exchange for this review. While I was given a free frame, all opinions in this post are 100% honest and 100% my own!*

Since all of my builder-grade mirrors are already framed, I asked my parents if they’d like one of their mirrors framed and they jumped at the opportunity! They were NOT disappointed…

Fall-Inspired Front Door Hanging for Under $11

So I have a kind of weird confession: I have a soft spot in my heart for Wal-Mart. Growing up in a town of 7,000 people, Wal-Mart was our only department store. The closest legit shopping mall was 1.5 hours away, and it was usually more convenient to go to Wal-Mart for groceries than one of the other grocery stores in town. I went to the same Wal-Mart almost every week for the first 18 years of my life. I have a lot of fond memories grocery shopping with my mom and walking around there with friends – yes, that’s what you do for fun when you’re 16, living in a town of 7,000 people, and it’s -20 degrees outside.

Now that I live in Arizona and there are a million other shopping options besides Wal-Mart, I STILL choose to go to Wal-Mart for everyday stuff. It feels so familiar and I do feel like I’m getting the best prices. So earlier this week I decided to browse through the craft section (which I’ll admit, is usually pretty crappy). I was pleasantly surprised at the supplies and was inspired to make a fall-inspired front door hanging! Plus, the whole thing cost me just $10.86!!!

DIY Fall Decor: Stacked Signs with 2×4’s

This post was originally published in September 2017 and was updated in September 2018.

Okay guys, I’m taking a small reprieve from our barn door project to bring you an easy and fun DIY project! We have a lot of small-ish 2×4 ends leftover from the barn doors, so I wanted to find a way to use ’em up. My first project is a set of fall-inspired stacked signs! They were really easy, inexpensive, and a fun way to bring more fall decor into my home!

DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, I don’t actually have hayrides or a pumpkin patch in my house. “Apple Cider” is pointing to my pantry, so I suppose that’s appropriate. LOL

Anyway, let’s hop to it!
