Guest Bathroom Makeover – Before & After!

This post was originally published in February 2017 and was updated September 2018.

Well, hello, friends! You’ve caught me on a great day because it’s time for ANOTHER bathroom makeover reveal!!! This time, it’s a guest bathroom makeover. As ou might recall, we’ve already completed our master bathroom makeover as well as our upstairs bathroom renovation. You can say we’re experts by now, ha! They’re all pretty, and so is this one. Let me tell you, you’re in for a treat!

Like our master bath, this guest bathroom was a big blob of tan.

Thankfully, this tan blob was short-lived. With a lot of love, caulk, and elbow grease, this bathroom tRaNsFoRmEd!!!

Guest Bathroom Makeover DIY Checklist

Before I show you more pictures, let’s take a split-second list all the upgrades Andrew and I completed…

  1. Painted the walls with the color “Sea Salt” by Sherwin Williams, color-matched with Behr Marquee.
  2. Tore out the old vanity and installed a new vanity with sink top. We found this vanity on OfferUp (a local buy/sell app) for $180, about 67% off! It was originally from Home Depot.
  3. Added guard pieces to the bottom and left sides of the vanity to prevent water from getting into tight spaces.
  4. Installed a new faucet on the vanity. This was also from OfferUp, where we saved about 60%.
  5. Installed a tiled backsplash. This was a first for us both – more on that below.
  6. Put in new baseboard, which was taller and cleaner than our old stuff.
  7. Installed a new light fixture – also from OfferUp, where we saved about 40%.
  8. Hung a new mirror – I found this mirror at a store called Tuesday Morning. I would have framed the existing mirror (like we did in our other master bathroom), but it was too big for the space.
  9. Updated decor

The Grumpy Cat portrait was a fun touch when we moved in, but it was time to redecorate!

The Backsplash

One of the most interesting parts of this project was installing the backsplash. Neither of us had done this before, so there was a learning curve! We narrowed our choice down to these two options from The Home Depot and chose the left one to stay consistent with the bathroom’s simple theme.

Deciding Between Two Tile Options

I think we made a good choice!

The Sink

I was also strangely excited about our new faucet! It’s the type of faucet where you feel like you’re washing your hands from a hose, but in a fancy way. We bought this one on OfferUp, but you can find a similar one here on Amazon.

The Bathroom Decor

I did a bit of Pinterest-ing before I bought decor for the bathroom. When I came across this shelf at Hobby Lobby with the hanging bar for a hand towel, I knew it would be a perfect way to use this space! If you can’t find it at Hobby Lobby, you can find it here on Etsy.

Guest Bathroom Makeover - Decor

I loved the idea of a basket behind the toilet with extra toilet paper because I’d hate to have a get-together at my house and leave a guest in an awkward situation!

I found this wire basket at Michael’s in their Spring 2017 line. I’m not sure if it’s still available, but Hobby Lobby always has tons of cute baskets and may have something similar!

    1. Hey Blair! It’s an off-white color with light teal. I found it at Target around the time I published this post. 🙂

  3. Hi there? Have you guys done your floors yet? I’m having such a hard time finding the perfect flooring for my bathroom to go with the sea salt blue! Looking for inspo ❤️

    1. Oops! I was finished with my comment. I can look at the specific name when I get home in a few days, if you want. I would HIGHLY recommend the peel-and-stick vinyl if you’re doing it yourself. It is sooooo easy to install! And incredibly durable!

  4. Hi! Hobby Lobby has 2 different sizes for that wire basket is it the 9 in?

      1. Finally decided that the shelf was JUST the one I need for my very similar bathroom and of course my Hobby Lobby doesn’t have it anymore!

    1. Hi Tracey. Nothing specific, just a fun piece of decor! I’ve seen it symbolize marriage, like Mr & Mrs, or a family unit, or even meaning “…and life goes on!” Leaves our guests something to think about while they’re using our restroom. LOL.

  5. MICHELLE

Could you tell me the measurements of the sign? I have that same basket/shelf and want to decorate it similarly. I want to order a sign on etsy but want to get the right size.

    Hayley,
I absolutely love looking at your bathroom makeovers! I hope I can do some of this too! You have great taste! May I make one comment that would really help some of us? Please close the lid on the toilet before taking pictures. Eek! Thank you!

    1. Hi Janey, Thanks for stopping by! Yes, I learned after that after this post. This was at the beginning of my blogging journey and I was a bit of a newbie. 🙂

  7. I love the back splash. Where did you get this and whats the name/color? It’s beautiful

  8. I love this. What did you use to fill in the gap between the wall and your vanity on the left side

    1. Hi Susan – we just cut down a regular piece of wood to size, screwed it into the side of the vanity, the caulked it in and painted it a white that matched the vanity. Hope that helps!!

  9. Beautiful! What did you use to cover the other 2 holes on the vanity? That exactly what I need!

  10. Beautiful! What did you use to cover the other 2 holes on the vanity top? That’s exactly what I need!!

    1. Hi Maureen! We used sink hole covers – they sell them at Home Depot/Lowe’s/most hardware stores! They sell different sizes so make sure to measure your holes before you visit the store! ????

      1. Does Tiesday Morning only allow you to shop at stores or can you order online?

  11. Can you tell me where you got your Little Things sign? Love the makeover!

  12. Hey! So cute! Where did you get the tin floral vase hanging on your wall where grumpy cat use to be?? I’ve been looking for something similar!

    1. Hi Karli! Great question! I found that at Hobby Lobby. Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for stopping by! ????

    2. Hi Karli! Sorry for my late response. I got that at Hobby Lobby. Not sure if they still have it, but I think it was in the floral section with the other vases. I hope this helps!

  13. Where did you find your wire basket over the vanity? It’s super cute!

    1. Hi Rana! I got that one at Hobby Lobby. I linked to a similar, just as cute one on Amazon in the article. Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Love the backsplash! Would you share the tile and grout info?

    1. Hi Gina! I got this one from Kohl’s. I actually got the hand towel size, and I have two full sized towels for our master bathroom! I especially like them because they’re kind of reversible, with predominately white on one side and grey on the other side, just reversed. Hope this helps! ????

    1. Hi Farinaz! I found it at Tuesday Morning. It was SUCH a struggle finding a mirror to fit that space, but that one finally worked! Thanks for stopping by!

  16. Did you find your towel bar shelf at Hobby? I have to have one!!! Great job on your renovation

    1. Hi Erin! Yes, I found the shelf w/ towel bar at Hobby Lobby, when it was 50% off! Such a steal! Thanks for stopping by!!

  17. Mary Ann

Love it Hayley! I’ve used sea salt in our home too and love it!

  18. You did a fantastic job! I love SW sea salt! I have used it in several rooms in my home. Such a soothing color! Love the shelf decor also!

    1. Thank you, Lauren!! I found Sea Salt on Pinterest and was so excited when I tried it out! It’s the perfect color with a hint of green, and yes, so soothing! Thanks for commenting! ?
